Welcome to the University of Mary Washington! Many of your questions for 2014-2015 may be answered by reviewing the information below and visiting the UMW Financial Aid Web page at www.umw.edu/financialaid. Check out the ‘Info’ and ‘2014-2015 Documents’ tabs.
Q. How do I apply for financial aid?
A. Complete the 2014-2015 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It will be available at www.fafsa.ed.gov after January 1, 2014.
Q. When will I hear about merit scholarships?
A. Students are usually notified through the Office of Admissions starting in January.
Q. When can I expect to receive my financial aid award notification?
A. Students who are offered admission, filed the FAFSA on time and for whom UMW has valid results OR have been awarded a merit scholarship, will receive their award notifications via mail in March. After that, award letters are mailed weekly. Required documents, such as 2013 federal tax transcripts (NOT tax returns) and verification worksheets will be listed on the award notifications. In May, students who accept the offer of admission will receive correspondence from the Office of Financial Aid via their UMW e-mail account and their EagleNet portal.
Q. Are campus jobs available and how do I apply for a job on campus?
A. Students may complete the work application at any time after April 2014; however, students with demonstrated financial need (by filing the FAFSA) are considered for jobs first. Campus employment is part of the financial aid award and does impact other financial aid. The employment application is available on our Web page. Original documents that establish eligibility and identity for the federal I-9 Form must be submitted before students may work.
Q. What are the costs for 2014-2015?
A. Actual costs are determined in late April when the Board of Visitors meets. Once the costs are known, you will receive that information in the mail. Current costs can be found in the ‘General Information’ document on the Financial Aid Web page.
Q. How do I apply for a student or parent loan?
A. Information is posted to our Financial Aid Web page at www.umw.edu/financialaid in the loan section and will be included with the award notifications.
Q. How do I apply for scholarships that have not yet been awarded?
A. UMW packages all available scholarship funds for freshmen in their initial financial aid award. For scholarships that are awarded by committee in June, submit a completed General Scholarship Application by May 15. The form will be available in February 2014.
Q. How do I request consideration for special circumstances?
A. The student and parent must write a letter describing the details. Information and instructions are available on our Web page. Letters of special circumstance are reviewed in early April and families will receive notification regarding the status of the request shortly thereafter. Since funds are limited, all requests for additional aid must be in the form of a formal request using the special circumstances instructions.
Q. When is my bill due and what other options are available?
A. The bill for fall is usually due in late July. Payments plan information will be sent to students and parents during spring 2014.
