Subject: UMW 2016 Faculty and Staff Engagement Assessment

Dear Colleagues,

In February, we conducted the UMW 2016 Faculty and Staff Engagement Assessment.  The results are in!  With 49% participation, we can be confident that the results represent the views and experiences of our community.  THANK YOU.

We learned what works well:

  • Strong departmental work teams
  • Support for work life balance
  • Our commitment to our students and the liberal arts
  • Pride in being part of UMW
We learned what needs to be improved:

  • Compensation
  • Senior leadership’s communication with the campus community
  • Silo mentality
  • Bureaucracy

Our Immediate Next Steps

Most importantly, we want to connect with you.

Your ongoing feedback and participation will guide our joint efforts to support the success and engagement of all faculty and staff.  The Cabinet and the Faculty and Staff Assessment Committee received the detailed report earlier this month and have already met with our ModernThink Consultant, Rich Boyer, to review what we have learned. This summer, we will prepare a plan for full and candid discourse.  The campus community will be offered a variety of collaborative opportunities this fall to review the detailed report, help identify priorities and begin to develop strategic action steps. Additionally, when Dr. Paino arrives in July as our new president, he will share his vision for how to engage the campus community in a conversation about the results and how to determine next steps to support our continuing commitment to excellence.

This assessment is not simply a one-time event.  We now have a baseline for this critical work.  The UMW strategic plan, Mary Washington 2020: Excellence. Impact. Distinction., states our commitment to regular assessments and to use the results to enhance the well being of all members of the University community.

Thank you again to the faculty and staff who served on the assessment committee for their support and involvement in this project.
