Employee Categories

Administrative Faculty (A/P Faculty)

A/P Faculty are employees holding academic rank who are appointed by the President to perform the administrative and support functions.

Administrative Faculty perform work directly related to the management of the educational and general activities of the institution, or a department or subdivision thereof.  Incumbents in these positions exercise discretion and independent judgment and generally direct the work of others.  These positions are normally no lower than three reporting levels below the President.

Professional faculty demonstrate advanced learning and experience acquired by prolonged formal instruction and/or specialized work experience.  This category includes such positions as librarians, counselors and other professional positions serving education, research, athletic, medical, student affairs and development functions or activities.

Classified Employees

Classified employees are salaried employees whose positions are subject to the Virginia Personnel Act.

Instructional Faculty

Instructional faculty are individuals who hold either full-time or part-time teaching appointments in various academic departments and programs and who teach courses for credit toward University of Mary Washington degrees.

Wage and Other Supplemental Part-time Employees

Wage employees serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and are not guaranteed employment for a particular term.  They are non-exempt, and are paid only for the hours they work and are not covered by the Virginia Personnel Act.

In limited cases, departments may engage other supplemental part time personnel, using employee agreements, to perform specified duties in exchange for agreed compensation.  Examples include graduate interns, professional development adjuncts, athletic interns, and assistant coaches.  The provisions of this handbook that pertain to wage employees also pertain to these employees, unless explicitly excluded.
