Chapter 13: Specialized Cleaning Procedures

The following are recommended cleaning methods for the materials indicated. Other EPA and OSHA approved methods may also be used.

Floor Tile Mastic

-use wet stripping methods only
-use mops wetted with amended water


* sweep with a broom
* lift or break tiles
* use dry abrasive cleaners
* drill, wire brush or sand

Floor Tile Mastic

-cover old mastic with new adhesive when replacing tiles


*scrape or try to remove old mastic

Wall and Ceiling Plaster

-use rags or mops wetted with amended water to dust
-use a HEPA vacuum to remove or replace

DO NOT *break tiles if removal is necessary
*raise or disturb drop in ceiling tiles without proper attire
*disturb or try to remove old mastic
Spray-on-Fireproofing -HEPA vacuum any debris in area
-wear proper attire (respirator and disposable suit)
-if disturbance is necessary, wet entire area with amended water
DO NOT *intentionally disturb materials without authorization and training
*clean debris with material dry
Thermal System

-HEPA vacuum any debris Insulation
-wet wipe using amended water

DO NOT *disturb material that is still intact
Carpet -HEPA vacuum
-steam clean
DO NOT *use a standard type vacuum
Baseboard Mastic -cover with new adhesive if baseboard is removed
-HEPA vacuum any debris
DO NOT *scrape, beat or try to remove
Window Framing & Glazing Compound -HEPA vacuum any debris
-wipe with rags wetted with amended water
DO NOT *scrape, beat or try to remove
Disposal Dispose of all asbestos debris, mop-heads, rags, filters, HEPA vacuum bags, and water obtained from steam cleaning in sealed, leak tight containers. DO NOT BREAK ASBESTOS CONTAINING MATERIAL TO FIT INTO BAGS . Pieces too large to fit into bags should be wrapped twice in polyethylene sheets 6 mil thick and sealed with duct tape. Label as asbestos containing material and dispose of following all Virginia and EPA regulations pertaining to asbestos.
