Repair/Replace Underground Utilities – Construction Update

June 2, 2021 – Based on field discoveries made yesterday, the water service interruption planned for today is postponed to Thursday, June 3. The outage timing will remain the same – 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. As a reminder, the work will require shutting off water service to all buildings south of Farmer Hall. The list includes:

May 31, 2021 – There will be a water outage on parts of the Fredericksburg campus tomorrow, June 1, from noon to 6 p.m. and Wednesday, June 2, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Athena Construction Group will be installing valves to the water line in the outbound lane of Jefferson Square Drive near the Bell Tower and in Jefferson Square close to Combs Hall. The work will require shutting off water service to all buildings south of Farmer Hall. The list includes:

Water will be restored Tuesday evening between the outages. Please note that the water outage and associated work is dependent on weather conditions.

In addition, the steam outage from last weekend will be extended through this week until next Monday, June 7. This will allow repair work to continue in the steam tunnels.

Week of May 17th – Expect congested travel along Double Drive as the water line replacement begins near the Bell Tower.  Be aware of construction vehicle movement and obey direction from the contractors’ traffic safety personnel. 


Week of May 10th – Athena Construction will begin mobilizing this week.   Initial work will include the installation of fencing and detour pathways in and around Woodard Hall and  Kalnen Plaza.  Construction traffic will be entering and exiting via College Avenue near duPont Hall walk as materials are brought on site.  Expect stacks of temporary fencing to begin appearing along Campus Walk.  Should you have any questions, Les Johnson, UMW Project Manager, can be contacted at ajohnso3@umw.edu.
