Student Employment Process

Student employment jobs are awarded at 10 hours per week, with the exception of Resident Assistants and Head Residents.  It is the policy of UMW to give priority to students with demonstrated financial need when awarding student employment jobs.

Students returning to the same position for the following academic year are assigned from the lists received from the supervisors at the end of the spring semester.  A Financial Aid notification letter is sent to the student by midsummer.  All returning student aides must have an application on file for that specific academic year.

After offering jobs to the incoming freshman with demonstrated financial need and to the returning student aides, if there are positions open, they are filled from the pool of applications kept in the Financial Aid Office.  Priority is given to those students with demonstrated financial need.

Students interested in applying for a job may complete applications which are available in the Office of Financial Aid and on the financial aid website.  If one has been filed, the student will contact the Financial Aid Office to see if she/he qualifies for the position and ask that her/his application be sent to that specific department.

After screening for qualifications (financial aid, grades, etc.), the applications will be sent to the supervisor, who then will contact the student/s for an interview.  Once the supervisor chooses the student to be hired and informs the Financial Aid Office of her/his decision, information regarding the required paperwork is sent to the student, and once the completed paperwork is submitted, the Payroll Office is informed to put the student on the payroll.

Please see the Required Forms for Student Employment if you would like to apply for a job or if you are going through the hiring process.
