Assistant Director
Office of Budget and Financial Analysis
Paul Messplay
Pam is willing to share her expertise of the university’s budget with all who ask for her assistance.  Pam has a detailed understanding of the budget and her analytical skills are an essential part of the daily financial decisions that are needed to keep the university operating.  Pam has the ability to contribute to big picture decisions at the university level but also help a department understand its budget and how best to manage limited resources.  Like many areas at UMW, the Budget Office is working with limited staff, but Pam has willingly stepped-up to maintain a high-quality, customer service orientation in her department.  I and many others around the university could not effectively do their jobs without Pam’s dedicated assistance.

Nominated by:
Jose Sainz
Faculty
Director/Professor
Center for International Education/Dept. of Modern Languages
Jill Hyman
In the wake of an unprecedented global pandemic, Dr. Jose Sainz has led the UMW Center for International Education with a unique blend of strength, positivity, steadfastness, integrity, and patience. In March, when the world began going into lockdown, over 30 UMW students were studying abroad around the globe, several international students were studying in Fredericksburg, and numerous faculty-led programs were planned for the summer. With the news and governmental policies changing almost by the minute, Dr. Sainz maintained constant communication with his staff and students, and guided all aspects of international education at UMW as the ‘new normal’ began.
On top of his duties as the director of CIE and a professor of Spanish, Dr. Sainz also took on a majority of the duties from a staff member who departed in May. He has thus also served as the interim international student advisor, navigating the challenges of everchanging federal policies, coordination with partners around the world, and juggling three full-time jobs at once. Despite these challenges, Dr. Sainz has never once wavered in his commitment to the UMW community, to his staff, or to his students. His steadfastness, positivity, sense of humor, strength of character, and forward thinking in the wake of extreme adversity are an example to the entire campus, and have truly been a guiding light during these difficult times. Dr. Sainz is an inspiration not just to his staff and students, but to all Eagles.

Sharon Neville

Asst Building Mgr
Facilities / Housekeeping
Beverly Spring, Pamela Minter and Rosa Mata.
Sharon is and has been doing the job of two people for a long time now. If you needs something she will get you what you need or find the answer to the best of her ability. She is always there to help 24/7. She goes above and beyond her job and always doesn’t get the appreciation that we feel she deserves! You can never tell if she is tired, not feel well or just having a bad day! She just takes everything in stride and keeps on going with a smile and a friendly attitude. She steps up to the plate whenever a job needs to be done and gets it done. She leads by example and will get in there when a jobs needs to be done and we are short handed to try and take some of the pressure off some of the other teammates. She checks on us everyday even when she is off to make sure everything is okay and if we need anything especially  during the Covid 19 crises. After over 23 years at UMW she knows the campus and the right people to help make our jobs a little easier.  This is not only from me but a lot of people in housekeeping. Thank you, Beverly Spring, Pamela Minter and Rosa Mata.

Nominated by:
Danielle Smith
A/P Faculty
Assistive Technology Coordinator
ODR
Jessica Machado
When I think of what a team player stands for, Danielle Smith is the first person who comes to mind. Danielle has been an essential part of the ODR team since we created the Assistive Technology Coordinator position in our office. Often, I think how the Assistive Technology Coordinator position was created with someone exactly like Danielle in mind and how fortunate UMW is to have her. Danielle’s job is one that continues to evolve in terms of responsibilities and overcoming challenges as the ODR student population grows, technology advances, and various needs change and arise in our community. It is clear that Danielle takes the many responsibilities she has been given, some of which are not directly related to assistive technology but rather due to the needs of a small office with overflowing responsibilities, with the utmost grace. She has always leaned into challenges to work through them, methodically and with the clarity of someone who seeks to overcome obstacles, no matter how big or small. She has always reached out to support her team, despite how much she is responsible for coordinating. It is difficult to give a specific example because there are so many. No matter the challenge, she is one that shines a light for her team to move towards solutions and solving problems. She is a team member that makes working in such a challenging environment, one in which we are able to accomplish great things because she exemplifies the character of dependability and support. She is very relied upon in ways that are both seen and unseen due to the nature of her work with technology, as well as her willingness to always do what is needed and asked. I wish that everyone had the opportunity to work with someone like Danielle. She is quick to jump in to finding a solution through quality decision-making. She is always a calm voice of reason on our team. She is our go-to person who we all find ourselves talking to when we have a difficult problem we are facing in our office, assistive technology-related or otherwise. In our office, we literally tell her almost every single day, that we do not know what we would do without her. We simply cannot say enough about what Danielle Smith brings to UMW; and for these reasons, and so many more, ODR would like to nominate Danielle for the Larry Atkins Staff Award.

Nominated by:
Evie Sherlock
Classified
Associate Registrar
Registrar
Rita Dunston

Evie has been employed at UMW for five years and what an asset! She works countless hours without any recognition and doesn’t expect nor desire the recognition because she feels, ‘it is her job.’  She displays an unwavering dedication to the institution as it is normal for Evie to forgo personal opportunities to keep work commitments flowing until completion. Her commitment and focus is always the success of UMW. For example, it is uncommon for colleagues to contact me, as her supervisor, about the excellent service received from Evie. This is also evident as many of the Department Chairs rely on her expertise to get their jobs done. She is consistent and competence and willing to go that extra mile.

Evie works extremely well with the college community. I am amazed at the relationships she has with faculty, staff and students. Evie is will regarded by colleagues and contributes to a positive work environment. For instance, she takes an active interest in colleagues concerns, shows sensitivity as well as display a level of trust to other feelings and perspectives. She provides sincere compliments to those she supervises and to other employees at the university.  She doesn’t think about whose responsibility it is to get the job done, she sees the bigger picture of serving the needs of others and if that means having to do her job and others, then that is exactly what she will do.  She follows through on what she said she will do—you can confide in her and she’ll be there in a pinch – that’s a rarity in many employees today.

Not only does Evie have a ‘can-do attitude’, you can add a will-do attitude. Consistently, she’s willing to change directions and focus on what can be done instead of what can’t be done For example, due to COVID-19 the entire spring and summer schedule of classes had to be re-entered due to changes in instructional modalities.  Not once did Evie complain about the many changes instead she allowed her Can-do attitude to shine. She remained optimistic, motivated and enthusiastic throughout the entire process. While I my exampled referenced COVID-19, this behavior is repeated frequently for Evie. Over the past five years she’s been employed she has always been ready to jump in and get the job done.  Though some of the tasks have been major hurdles, her positive energy, enthusiasm, and cooperative spirit radiates.

Crystal Rawls
Britni is the soul of UMW’s New Student Programs. She gives her all in her role and it shows, especially when it comes to orientation. She is loved by the students that she works with, along with her co-workers. When she comes into the office, she brings so much positive energy and joy and it has been an honor to work with her over the past two years. Elizabeth Southern

Manager of Athletic Operations
Department of Athletics, Health and Physical Education
Patrick Catullo
It is my pleasure to nominate Betsy Southern for this award. Betsy has recently taken on the added role of COVID Care Coordinator at UMW. She approaches challenges with a positive “can do” attitude, has an inquisitive nature and is a person of high integrity and character. She is completely selfless in her desire to help the group as a whole, and I know our students and staff have benefited from this alike. I can say without hesitation that she is a true “team player.” She is the type of individual one can count on, not only to do her part, but to also help others in working toward a successful outcome. Now more than ever, people like Betsy have made all of the challenges we have faced that much easier to manage. Betsy has the ability to interact with diverse groups of people and is extremely personable and genuinely concerned about the welfare of others, specifically our students at UMW. She is such an asset to our department and University, and truly deserving of this recognition. Please let me know if I can provide any additional support on her behalf.

When you call into the Registrar’s office, the first voice that you will hear is that of Ms. Mary White. She greets you with the kindest voice and goes out her way to assist you in whatever the need is or transfer you to the appropriate person. Mary is a positive example of UMW employees.

Nominee:
Classification:
Position:

Nominated by:
Angela McCormick
Classified
Associate Director of Alumni Communications
Alumni Relations
Mark Thaden

“Unsung hero” really defines Angela. A person who is behind the scenes making things come together yet rarely gets credit for success. It is through Angela’s work that alumni relations programs have thrived over the past few years, and especially during the pandemic. Somehow Angela has managed to build event registration pages, maintain the alumni website, create e-blasts, manage several social media platforms, and supports other communications efforts across the University. Since March, Angela has taken on the additional responsibility of pushing out communications to current parents, a task that is time consuming and is outside of her scope of duties. She does all of this willingly and frequently cancels time off and works countless extra hours in order to ensure tasks are done when needed. She embodies dedication and loyalty to UMW, and gets her satisfaction not through recognition, but through knowing that it serves the University community. Whether directly or indirectly, Angela’s work has impacted every faculty member, student, parent, and alumnus of the University. Her passion for Mary Washington goes well beyond her work. She volunteers to serve on committees, plans local alumni events, and even has an e-bay alert so she knows when unique Mary Washington items are available in case she can purchase them and preserve the history.

While there are many deserving individuals for this award, I strongly encourage you to consider Angela for this honor. Thank you!

Lindsay Fare

Contract Officer
Procurement Services
Michelle Pickham
Lindsay joined the department a little over a year ago and since day 1 has been my right-hand gal. After quickly learning the various systems and processes in the department, including those for the SPCC program, Lindsay and I began working closely together on some areas of shared responsibilities. It’s throughout this working relationship that I’ve come to trust her 100% and I’m never let down. She is always there to help out or hold the fort down if I’m out of the office or can’t tackle something at that time, not to mention giving me the ability to take days off and go on vacation worry free because she is there to back me up and give me peace of mind. Anyone who knows this knows how big a deal it is! She’s always eager to learn and lend a hand to anyone who needs help and does so with an infectious smile. She was instrumental this year in partnering with Facilities to place PPE and related COVID purchases to help get the institution ready for reopening, as well as thoroughly documenting everything needed for reimbursement and other requirements. She was always quick to pivot when the need arose and priorities shifted because of the pandemic. She is lighthearted and friendly, and someone I am delighted to call my friend. I couldn’t imagine working without her! And all of this while wrangling 5 kids! THANK YOU, Lindsay, for ALL that you do!

Nominated by:
Melissa Palguta
AP Faculty
Staff Therapist
Talley Center for Counseling Services
Julia Faett
Dr. Palguta is an incredible asset to the Talley Center and to the university as a whole. She cares deeply for the students she works with and does everything she can to support them. Melissa provides individual counseling to students and leads two groups (the Sexual Assault Survivor’s Group and the LGBQT+ Group) every semester. UMW students greatly appreciate these groups and Melissa’s approach to them. Melissa works tirelessly to support her co-workers and the trainees at the counseling center. No matter how busy she is, she never hesitates to offer assistance if someone needs it. Melissa co-leads weekly group supervision for trainees and serves as a mentor to all of them. She is viewed as respectable, kind, and knowledgeable by all who work with her. In addition to her counseling duties, Melissa is actively involved in the campus community. She participates in UMW’s Safe Zone program, helps organize the annual “Take Back the Night” event, and serves on the Coordinated Community Response Team (CCRT). Melissa goes above and beyond in her role, and I know I speak for both myself and my colleagues when I say that I am so fortunate to have her as a co-worker. Thank you, Melissa.

Nominee:
Classification:
Position:
Department:
Nominated by:
Shannon Hauser
AP Faculty
Associate Director, Digital Knowledge Center
Provost
Cartland Berge

Before joining the Digital Learning Support team, Shannon worked for years at Simpson Library, where she stepped up on a number of occasions to fill in temporarily when staffing changes left gaps in responsibilities. This is a tradition she has continued in DLS, where vacant positions have meant that many unexpected duties “temporarily” shifted to her. This became particularly true at the start of the COVID pandemic. We suddenly found ourselves, a staff of three, supporting the university in the move to online teaching and learning. This was an incredibly overwhelming ask, but Shannon did not complain, and did not skip a beat – she immediately set to work doing what had to be done.  In the Great Online Pivot of 2020, Shannon took on responsibility far above the duties of her job to help improve the transition for faculty and students. She was tireless in her efforts: writing countless online guides, designing a Canvas course for the first ever virtual orientation, and working with faculty both in one-on-one consultations and in large group presentations via Zoom. But her crowning accomplishment is the ReFocus Online website.

Working in close collaboration with the Center for Teaching, Shannon built this site, from scratch, into an incredibly comprehensive resource that will be used by faculty for years to come, at UMW and beyond. It combines discussions of pedagogical practice, practical application exercises, faculty models, and more, in a sleek, digestible, and unified design. But don’t take my word for it! See for yourself at http://learn.umw.edu/refocus

None of this is spelled out in her job description, but she accomplished it with gusto.  Shannon’s contributions to the university and its mission cannot be overstated. She believes in Mary Washington, and has poured her lifeblood into making it the best institution it can be. Her work has been so integral to our unit’s operation, and to the entire pandemic faculty development effort, that I shudder to imagine what this fall would look like without her.

Shannon is a proud UMW alum, a dedicated worker, and an outstanding human being. She deserves all the recognition we can give her.
